Quintette asks writers five quick questions. This week’s interview is with:
Delwyn Jenkins
1. What’s the name of your latest book – and how hard was it to pick a title?
My book’s title is Called By Fire. I’m terrible with book titles – I usually save them on my computer as the name of the main character until I can come up with something decent. This book was Kamryn for over a year!
My female protagonist is a fire witch, so I wanted something with fire in the title, but it’s also the first of a series so I needed something that could be carried on through the other books. Eventually (after much brain-wracking) I came up with Called By Fire. Thankfully my publisher liked it too.
2. If you could choose anyone from any time period, who would you cast as the leads in your latest book?
I’m always terrible at these questions. I start with my character’s backstory and personality and then finish with how they look. Some authors are visual and like to have pictures of their characters but that doesn’t work for me.
I think Kamryn could be played by one of those sassy nineteen-fifties stars like Maureen O’Hara or Rosalind Russell. Plenty feminine and soft, but plenty of spine as well. For Alex, my hero, I’m thinking Chris Hemsworth – strong, ready to fight, but with a capacity for lightheartedness (and a good flirt!)
3. What five words best describe your story?
Sexy, magic, warrior, witch, sexy (did I mention sexy?)
4. Who is your favourite fictional couple?
At the moment, book-wise, it’s Gideon and Eva from the Crossfire series by Silvia Day. I cry in every book, every time.
And as an ‘out there’ choice, for TV I’m going for the Torchwood episode called ‘Captain Jack Harkness’ series one (I think it’s episode ten or something). It’s man to man, but its so full of love, beauty, hope and courage it never fails to fill my heart up.
5. What song always makes you cry?
Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls.

About Called by Fire
Kamryn Vale is a Dahnan witch who wants nothing more than to complete her studies in the World Between and return to her normal life. But when a sister-witch is murdered and another kidnapped, Kamryn discovers a dark magic so terrifying it threatens the safety of both her worlds. Driven by the need to help in the investigation, Kamryn must deal with the complications of working with the mysterious Watchtower Knights.
After two hundred years in exile, the Knights have been invited back to protect the Witches at the Collegium. They can’t afford any mistakes, and Alex knows his attraction for the fire witch has trouble written all over it. With one eye on the investigation and the other on Kamryn, Alex must balance his obligation to duty with the needs of his heart.
