Quintette asks writers five quick questions. This week’s interview is with:
Cecil Wilde
1. What’s the name of your latest book – and how hard was it to pick a title?
The book’s called No Straight Boys and titles are the universe’s punishment for writers. In the end, I went with a phrase that comes up a few times and sort of embodies the central tension in the story; that is, that Jace isn’t going to date anyone who isn’t out and Ethan isn’t, in the beginning, out.
2. If you could choose anyone from any time period, who would you cast as the leads in your latest book?
You know up until last week he was barely even on my radar, but I can’t imagine anyone other than a slightly younger (and as such squishier) Chris Pratt as Ethan. For Jace, I think we need to go forward 10 years and grab the Dylan O’Brien of the future. He’s got exactly that kind of perpetually tousled, manic thing down.
3. What five words best describe your story?
There’s a lot of texting.
4. Who is your favourite fictional couple?
Noooo this is a hard question. So many possible answers. But if pressed I’d have to go back to my roots and say Holmes and Watson (I know, I know). I like that kind of quiet, complementary relationship that just lasts forever.
5. What song always makes you cry?
It’s weirdly easy to make me cry over songs. Def Leppard’s Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad will do it every time, though.
About No Straight Boys
Not dating straight boys is a pretty good strategy for long-term relationships if you’re a gay man, but what happens when one particular straight boy turns out to be the man of your dreams?
Cute, funny, and sometimes borderline philosophical, No Straight Boys is about what happens when perfection isn’t what you think it is, and love is best found via late-night text message.
